| Algeria is a country in North Africa. In the north, it is washed by the Mediterranean Sea. It borders with Tunisia and Libya in the east; with Niger, Mali and Mauritania in the south; and with Morocco in the west. The country occupies an area of 2381741 square kilometers. Algeria has four major physical regions. In the north, stretching along the coast and from 80 to 190 km to the south, Tel is located, consisting of narrow valleys ending with a part of the Atlas mountain range. In the Atlas Mountains, originates the main river of the country Chelif, which flows into the Mediterranean Sea. South of the Tel practically there are no rivers. Further to the south is the second region - High Plateau, several depressions of which in the rainy season form small lakes. When dry they become saline areas, called "schott” or "chott”. The third region is a Saharan part of the Atlas Mountains. The fourth, occupying more than 90% of the country, is the Algerian Sahara, a stone desert. In the south of the region, there are the Hoggar Mountains and the highest point of Algeria, the Mount Tahat (3003 m). | |
