Czech Republic: information about country

Historical and cultural heritage that has passed through centuries and generations, Slavic culture and hospitality, affinity of language and fine cuisine – everything can be found in the Czech Republic, which does not leave indifferent even the most preserved in emotions person. That is why, once having traveled to the Czech Republic, people tend to go back there again and again. This is perhaps the most important thing because a man returns only to what he loves.

The Czech Republic is located in Central Europe, occupying the historic regions of Bohemia and Moravia and also a part of Silesia. The country shares borders with Poland, Slovakia, Austria, and Germany. It occupies an area of 78,864 square kilometers. The highest point of the country is the Snezka Mountain (1602 m), located in the Sudeten Mountains, the lowest point is a part of the Elbe (Labe) River, 117 m above sea level. The largest rivers are the Elbe (357 km) with its tributary, the Vltava River, in the western part of the country; the Morava River (329 km) in the eastern part; and the Oder River. The interior of the country has a large number of medicinal mineral water. Mineral and thermal springs, therapeutic mud lakes and baths served for the construction of the resorts.

Customs formalities. Duty-free import permits 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of smoking tobacco, 1 liter of spirits or 2 liters of wine. Import and export of foreign and local currency is unlimited, but it should be declared. It is allowed the import of goods with a value of 3,000 crowns. You must confirm the availability of funds to stay in the Czech Republic ($ 30 per day per person), and the presence of a return ticket or money to buy it.

Currency. Despite the fact that the Czech Republic entered the European Union, there is an actively use of the local currency (Czech Koruna) in the country. The Czech Koruna appeared in 1993, its rate is approximately equal to the ruble (to get the analog in korunas, you should divide the amount in rubles by the approximate ratio of 1.6), that’s why Russian tourists are familiar with the Czech prices. In circulation, there are coins with a face value of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 korunas and also banknotes with a face value of 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 korunas. It is almost impossible to exchange dollars, euros or rubles to Czech Korunas in Russia, so tourists going to the Czech Republic should have euros or dollars. You should be careful while exchanging money, because in the exchange offices you can be charged a commission of 5-10% (even though the sign says «No Commission») – nobody warns about it. It is better to exchange money in small exchange offices, where Arabs work – they have more favorable rate and usually don’t charge a commission. You shouldn’t exchange money in the banks and the airport - the commission will be very considerable. If you have international payment cards, of course you can pay directly by them or get money from cash dispensers. Payment cards are usually accepted in shops and some restaurants in major cities. Travelers' checks issued by the world-famous companies are freely accepted by the majority of Czech banks.
