| The flag of the Republic of Congo has three colors (diagonally: green, yellow, and red). The green represents forests, the yellow - the sun, and the red - the blood of fighters for independence. On the yellow-green background of the emblem there is a red profile of a lion which holds a torch. Above it is the crown, supported by two elephants. At the top of the emblem is the inscription "Republic of the Congo." In the lower part there is a slogan of the Republic of Congo: "Unity, work, progress." The Republic of Congo is a country located on the Atlantic coast of Central Africa. It shares borders with Gabon in the west, with Cameroon and the Central African Republic in the north, with the Democratic Republic of Congo in the south-east and with Angola (province of Cabinda) in the south. The country occupies an area of 342 000 square kilometers. The coastline extent is of 170 km. The new constitution of the Republic of Congo, adopted on January 20, 2002 in a national referendum, strengthened the presidential form of government in the country. The head of the state - the president - is a central figure in the public institutions. He is the head of the government as well as the chief of the armed forces. The president is elected for seven years, renewable for a further term, and has rights for legislative initiate. The country has a large number of political parties and associations. Most of them are of regional character. The regime is based on a coalition "Union of Democratic Forces", the core of which is the Congolese Party of Labor (CPL). The coalition includes more than 20 political associations. Opposition parties, especially large ones, are going through a difficult period of splits and reorganizations. The most powerful position in the south of the country has the Pan-African Union for Social Democracy (PUSD) and the Congolese Movement for Democracy and Integral Development (CMDID). | |
