| Dominica is a country located on the island of Dominica in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. It is washed by the Caribbean Sea in the west and the Atlantic Ocean in the east. In the north, is separated by the Strait of Dominica from the island of Guadeloupe, in the south – by the Strait of Martinique from the island of the same name. The surface of the island is mountainous, formed by volcanic chains with fairly steep slopes, covered with tropical forests. Many extinct volcanoes rise in the form of pointed peaks above the dense forest cover. The highest point is the Diablotins volcano (1447 m) in the northern part of the island. The total area of the island is 754 square kilometers. English is the official language, spoken by almost all the inhabitants of the island. Creole is the local dialect, which originated from the French with the borrowing of words of the Caribbean Indians and West African syntax. Currently is used only in remote villages and in the speech of elderly residents of the island. The political condition: Since 1978, Dominica is an independent republic (until 1763 - the possession of France, until 1967 - a colony of the UK), part of the British Commonwealth. The head of the country is the president, the head of the government - the prime minister. Legislative body is represented by the unicameral parliament (31 deputies). Medical aid: The General Hospital is called Princess Margaret Hospital, and several small are in other parts of the island: Portsmouth - the second largest city in the north, Marigot – in the east, and Grand Bay – in the south. Private clinics and doctors are can be found throughout the island. Safety: Dominica is considered one of the safest countries in the Caribbean.
