Ukraine occupies a territory of 603.7 thousand square kilometers. It shares borders: with Belarus in the north, with the Russian Federation in the north-east and east, with Poland in the north-west, with Slovakia in the west, with Moldova, Hungary and Romania in the south-west, and with Russia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Georgia on the sea. In south, Ukraine is washed by the Black and Azov Seas. The border length is about 8215 km. The length of the land (river, lake) border between Russia and Ukraine is of 1925.8 kilometers. Southern region of Ukraine is the country’s sea gates; here are the world famous resorts. Eastern areas are industrial region with developed machine building, metallurgy and agriculture. The central areas are the breadbaskets of Ukraine, a highly industrialized region, where a considerable part of the country’s oil reserves is concentrated. Western areas include an agricultural region with a significant recreational potential of the Carpathians. Ukraine is composed of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, 24 regions, and cities of Kyiv and Sevastopol. Ukraine's population is about 50 million people, the most populous are Donetsk (4.8 million), Dnepropetrovsk (3.5 million) and Kharkov (2.9 million) regions; in Crimea live 2 million people. The climate of Ukraine is temperate in the main part of the territory, in the extreme south is subtropical. Transport. Railways play the leading role (with a length of about 23000 kilometers). The total length of roads in Ukraine is of 172.3 thousand kilometers, of paved highways - 116.7 thousand kilometers. The main seaports are Odessa, Illichivsk, South, Izmail, Reni, Nikolaev, Kherson, and Mariupol. There are altogether 18 ports in Ukraine. The total length of river waterways is of 4.5 thousand kilometers. The main waterway is the Dnieper River. More than 63 thousand small rivers flow through the country, with a total length of nearly 136,000 kilometers. Major airports are Boryspol (Kyiv), Kharkov, Lvov, Odessa, Simferopol and Donetsk. | |
